Representing Child Abuse Victims in San Francisco
Child abuse refers to harming or injuring a child, either physically, psychologically, sexually, or emotionally. Unfortunately, child abuse continues to affect thousands of innocent children in San Francisco and the Bay Area every year. Child abuse can be committed by a parent, sibling, relative, neighbor, teacher, coach, religious figure, day care worker, stranger, etc. The point is that child abuse can occur anytime, anywhere, and by anyone. If you even have the slightest suspicion that your child is being abused, you must remove him/her from the abusive situation immediately. Don’t wait for your child to come to you—he or she is probably too scared, too embarrassed, and too ashamed to admit what is going on.
Types of Child Abuse
Child abuse can physical, psychological, or sexual in nature. Neglect is also a form of child abuse.
- Physical Abuse-the child suffers physical injury as a result of assault, battery, and other violent acts, such as kicking, hitting, punching, shaking, biting, burning, slapping, etc.
- Psychological Abuse-the child suffers psychological damage or emotional trauma as a result of threats, harassment, verbal abuse, etc. Psychological abuse leaves children emotionally scarred, which can cause them to become depressed, withdrawn, or act out behaviorally.
- Sexual Abuse- an adult commits sexual acts with the child for the sexual gratification of the adult. Sexual abuse against a child can include child molestation, statutory rape, fondling, exposing oneself to a child, forcing a child to watch sexual acts, or filming or photographing a child for child pornography.
- Neglect-an adult refuses to provide basic care and attention to the child. This can include failing to feed a child, failing to cloth a child, failing to provide a child with medical care, failing to make sure a child has clean living quarters, failing to provide a child with education, leaving a child alone for long periods of time, or permitting a child to witnesses violence or abuse.
